Die Handlung des Thrillers spielt sich in 24 Stunden ab. Jack Bauer, Chef einer Anti-Terror-Einheit, erfährt, dass seine Tochter entführt wurde und muss gleichzeitig einen Anschlag auf den Präsidentschaftskandidaten vereiteln. Dazu bleiben ihm nur 24 Stunden. Diese 24 Stunden sind exakt auf 24 Episoden verteilt, teilweise mit Split-Screen, um die sich überstürzenden Ereignisse zeitgenau zu dokumentieren.
