La cittadina di Perfection, in Nevada, è afflitta da un problema insolito: la presenza di grandi vermi sotterranei. Il vero nodo della questione è che questi organismi sono stati dichiarati specie protetta dal governo degli Stati Uniti; pertanto i residenti di Perfection sono costretti a gestire la situazione in autonomia, evitando in ogni caso di arrecare danno — anche involontario — alla popolazione sotterranea, in particolare a un esemplare di rilievo noto come El Blanco.
